John Nielsen

July 26th, 2011

On Tuesday, July 26th, 2011, peacefully at home in London, Ontario, John (Jack) Imrie Nielsen passed away in his 91st year. Beloved husband for 63 years of Edith (Reid) and loving father of Ian Nielsen (Valerie M’Garry) of Delaware, Ontario, and Larry (Theresa) Nielsen of London, Ontario. Sadly missed by his grandchildren Lauren (Joel) McLean, Nicole Nielsen, and John Taylor Nielsen. Jack is predeceased by his sister Annie Cook and brother Dennis Nielsen, and survived by his many nieces and nephews and their families. Jack was born and raised on a farm at Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. He attended Olds Agricultural College in 1938/39. He joined the army in January 1941 and after basic training was posted to Aklavik N.W.T. He served the next twelve and a half years at various locations on the N.W.T. and Yukon Radio System. On leaving the North, Jack served at Canadian Forces Bases Borden in Kingston, followed by two years on a NATO posting in London, England. Returning to Canada, he served at army headquarters in Ottawa. He retired in 1970 after 29 years and happily took up the role as “house husband”. Jack was an avid curler and lawn bowler and loved playing bridge.
